Palo Verde, Arizona is a small county island about 40 miles west of Phoenix. It’s in Maricopa County, and its name happens to be the Official State Tree of Arizona! It’s actually a Spanish word which means “green stick.”

The largest nuclear energy facility in the entire United States is also called The Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, which is near Wintersburg, Arizona.

In 1995, there was a train derailment near the county island that left about 78 people injured and one killed. Two documentaries were made about the causes of the wreck. It was even featured on Unsolved Mysteries. To this day, the case hasn’t been resolved.
